Our Doctors

The Kangaroo Island Medical Clinic is staffed by associate doctors and registrars. Our doctors all have extensive experience in rural medicine, and also provide emergency on-call services to the Kangaroo Island Health Service. All of our doctors are vocationally registered either through ACRRM or RACGP and are well versed in emergency medicine and procedures. They have admitting rights to the Kangaroo Island Hospital and provide quality, personalised in-patient care.

Dr Johannes Steyn

Dr Johannes Steyn trained and worked in South Africa before moving to Australia. Johannes has worked for many years as a rural GP in South Australia. Johannes and family moved to Kangaroo Island in September 2007, and has provided GP, anaesthetics and obstetric services tot he Kangaroo Island residents for the past 14 years. Johannes enjoys the work life balance KI has to offer, connecting with his patients on a professional level as well as on a personal level out of the practice. Johannes passion is to practice a wide range of medicine from cradle to grave and everything in between. Johannes interests out of work consist of fishing, tending to his many animals on his hobby farm as well as a keen cheese maker and helping is wife Rene with her business Emu Bay Holiday Homes.

Dr James Doube

Dr James Doube visits the island monthly seeing referred patients with minor surgery needs. James’ special interest is surgery and emergency medicine.

Dr Alec Stolz

Dr Alec Stolz graduated from Flinders University and completed GP training in Perth and Adelaide. Alex worked in remote health in the NT and 5 years in Laura in the Mid North before returning to Adelaide, splitting time between general practice and the RAH Emergency Department. Alex has been working at Kangaroo Island Hospital since 2018. His interests include running, music and getting out on the water.

Dr Philip Cohen

Dr Philip Cohen completed Medical School at UNSW in Sydney. More recently he has worked as a GP in the South East of SA, and completed anaesthetic training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Phil’s special interests include emergency, anaesthetics, point of care ultrasound, chronic disease management and particularity enjoys explaining how and why medical conditions occur. Phillip moved to Kangaroo Island in 2019 with his wife Stephanie and 2 children Natalie and Nathan. Phillips interests out of work consist of spear fishing with friends, spending quality time with his family and contributing to the local church group.

Dr Stephanie Cohen

Dr Stephanie Cohen trained at the University of New South Wales before completing her internship at Westmead Hospital. Stephanie started her GP training with GPEX in Naracoorte and is currently in her final term of GP training. Stephanie has interests in long term management of complex medical issues – particularly cardiac and respiratory. Steph enjoys putting together the pieces of a medical medical puzzle, to improve the health outcomes of her patients. Stephanie moved to Kangaroo Island in 2019 with her husband Phillip and 2 children Natalie and Nathan. Steph’s interests out of work consist of spending quality time with her young family, yoga, gym, gardening and socialising with friends.

Dr Ronald De Kruif

We welcomed Ronald, Helena & Leonore to Kangaroo Island in November 2022. Ronald trained in Rotterdam - The Netherlands, completing rotations in Zevenbergen, Rotterdam, Goes, the Netherlands & Lancefield Victoria. Ronald’s interests include outdoor sports including trail running, road cycling, hiking & sailing. With clinical interests in Healthy Living, Adult Mental Health & Palliative care.

Dr Kyle Fairclough

Dr Kyle Fairclough is currently undertaking his third term GP Registrar placement through GPEX. Kyle trained at the University of WA, before completing various hospital rotations in Perth. Kyle’s special interest include emergency medicine, population health and psychiatry. He is passionate about health and fitness, and supporting people to make positive changes in their health.

Dr Alex Booth

Dr Alex Booth joined the team at KI Medical Clinic in February 2023 and is currently undertaking first term GP Registrar through ACRRM. Alex has trained at Flinders University, before completing rotations at Royal Darwin Hospital, Broome Health Campus & Flinders Medical Centre. Alex’s interests include scuba diving, surfing, sports (go the Demons), hiking, travelling, spending time with friends & family with clinical interests including Emergency Medicine & Aboriginal Health.

Dr Erin O'Halloran

Trained at the University of Adelaide before completing her internship at Flinders Medical Centre. Erin is currently an ACRRM Australian General Practice Training registrar. Erin’s training & experience in Emergency Medicine is invaluable after working at Flinders Medical Centre for the past 12 years, in addition to this experience Erin has also held locum positions across a number of country hospitals. Erin’s clinical interests include Emergency Medicine & Paediatric medicine. Erin has also completed a year of paediatric emergency medicine and provides training in advanced paediatric life support to other clinicians.

Dr Lisa Murphy

Lisa grew up on a dairy farm in Myponga, and worked as a nurse for a number of years before completing her Doctor of Medicine with Flinders University in 2017. Currently undertaking her GP Registrar training at Kangaroo Island Medical Clinic, Lisa has previously worked in Registrar roles in General Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Emergency Medicine in Darwin, Launceston and remote regions of the Northern Territory and Kimberly. Lisa’s clinical interests include skin cancer surgery, burn injury management, and trauma.

Dr John McConnell

We welcomed John, Erica, Thomas & Oliver to the practice in late September 2022. John trained in NSW through the University of Newcastle & the University of New England's Joint Medical Program, completing placements in Armidale and Gosford NSW. John has completed hospital rotations in Gosford and Wyong Hospitals, as well as Anaesthetic rotations in Newcastle's Belmont Hospital and John Hunter Hospital. John is currently completing his GP training through GPEX, as a rural general practitioner. John's clinical interests are anaesthetics and Emergency Medicine.

Dr Sarah Saunders

Dr Sarah Saunders is our newest recruit, having just moved to Kangaroo Island from Darwin in February 2023. Sarah completed her medical training in the UK before moving to Australia in 2018 where she has worked in various locations throughout the Northern Territory including Darwin and Alice Springs. As well as enjoying all the challenges rural and remote GP practice has to offer, Sarah has a special interest in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, holding additional certification in Women’s Health. She also has a keen interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander healthcare and is passionate about health education and working to close the gaps in health inequality. When not at work you will likely find her down at the rock pool clocking up some lengths before her next swimming holiday, walking on the beaches or travelling around Asia. Sarah, her partner Charly and black rescue cat Auguste are excited to explore everything South Australia has to offer.

Our Nurses

Our nurses work with the doctors to provide general health care, including child and adult immunisations, diabetes cycle of care, asthma clinics, wound care and suture removal, pap smears, health assessments and pathology services. The Kangaroo Island Medical Clinic is open Monday to Friday, 8:45 am to 4:45 pm. If you need urgent care outside of these hours, please contact the KI Health Service (hospital) by phone on 08 8553 4200. The Health Service is located at Corner Wheelton Street and The Esplanade, Kingscote SA 5223. At the KI Health Service you will be triaged by the RN and the on-call doctor will be called in if necessary.
