Meet our doctors, nurses and admin staff of the Kangaroo Island Medical Clinic.
The Kangaroo Island Medical Clinic is staffed by associate doctors and registrars. Our doctors all have extensive experience in rural medicine, and also provide emergency on-call services to the Kangaroo Island Health Service. All of our doctors are vocationally registered either through ACRRM or RACGP and are well versed in emergency medicine and procedures. They have admitting rights to the Kangaroo Island Hospital and provide quality, personalised in-patient care.

Dr Johannes Steyn trained and worked in South Africa before moving to Australia. Johannes has worked for many years as a rural GP in South Australia. Johannes and family moved to Kangaroo Island in September 2007, and has provided GP, anaesthetics and obstetric services tot he Kangaroo Island residents for the past 14 years. Johannes enjoys the work life balance KI has to offer, connecting with his patients on a professional level as well as on a personal level out of the practice. Johannes passion is to practice a wide range of medicine from cradle to grave and everything in between. Johannes interests out of work consist of fishing, tending to his many animals on his hobby farm as well as a keen cheese maker and helping is wife Rene with her business Emu Bay Holiday Homes.
Dr James Doube visits the island monthly seeing referred patients with minor surgery needs. James’ special interest is surgery and emergency medicine.
Dr Alec Stolz graduated from Flinders University and completed GP training in Perth and Adelaide. Alex worked in remote health in the NT and 5 years in Laura in the Mid North before returning to Adelaide, splitting time between general practice and the RAH Emergency Department. Alex has been working at Kangaroo Island Hospital since 2018. His interests include running, music and getting out on the water.
Dr Owen Lewis, has joined our team part-time. Dr Lewis brings decades of experience in rural, remote, and international healthcare—and a deep commitment to serving communities like ours. A few highlights from Dr Lewis’s incredible journey: *Extensive rural and remote practice across SA, including with the Royal Flying Doctor Service *Years of service in Nepal, leading emergency and outpatient care and training future doctors *Strong background in Aboriginal health, including clinics at Point Pearce and APY Lands * Passionate educator and mentor, supporting medical students and international graduates Outside of medicine, Dr Lewis is a dedicated violinist, and his love for music is a big part of his life. He’s also proud to support his wife, The Reverend Mary Lewis, who serves as the minister of the local Anglican Church.
Dr Marshall has previously worked at KIMC as a Registrar through GPEx, after completing his fellowship through ACRRM. Scott has developed a special interest in Dermoscopy, skin cancer medicine and skin cancer surgery. In addition to being a consulting GP, Scott also conducts a weekly Skin Check Clinic in the practice
Dr English has joined KIMC in Feb of 2026 as an exprienced Emergency Medicine doctor with over a decade of senior clinical practice across major South Australian and remote Australian hospitals. His background includes advanced training in trauma, critical care, paediatrics, airway management, and emergency ultrasound, supported by extensive fellowship-level emergency medicine education. He has worked in varied settings—from Flinders Medical Centre and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital to Alice Springs and Mount Barker—bringing a strong blend of clinical skill, rural experience, and a commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care.
Moving from sunny Queensland to KI, Dr Sophie West brings with her husband Jack and kids Maggie, Lexie and Fred. As a family they are passionate about outdoors, camping and a bit of fishing out on the boat. Sophie has been a doctor for 10 years, initially training in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery in far north Queensland before switching to Emergency Medicine to better suit her young family. They have now made the move to KI to complete her rural GP training and hope to stay long term! Jack is an Emergency Nurse and will be posted at the local KI Health Service as well as hopefully volunteering across the community.
Dr Davina Lovegrove completed her training at Flinders University in 2018 and has worked across many rural communities since then. Davina's journey includes experience in emergency medicine and critical care, and advanced procedural skills and ward management in regional hospitals. Davina has also been active in leadership roles in rural health advocacy
Dr Erin O'Halloran trained at University of Adelaide, before continuing her postgraduate training at various South Australian hospitals, including the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Women's and Children's Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre. Erin also trained and worked in Emergency Medicine at Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Hospital and several rural hospitals for 12 years prior to coming to Kangaroo Island, including a year specialising in paediatric emergency medicine. Erin has spent the last 2 and a half years on Kangaroo Island working towards completing her fellowship with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine.
Our nurses work with the doctors to provide general health care, including child and adult immunisations, diabetes cycle of care, asthma clinics, wound care and suture removal, pap smears, health assessments and pathology services. The Kangaroo Island Medical Clinic is open Monday to Friday, 8:45 am to 4:45 pm. If you need urgent care outside of these hours, please contact the KI Health Service (hospital) by phone on 08 8553 4200. The Health Service is located at Corner Wheelton Street and The Esplanade, Kingscote SA 5223. At the KI Health Service you will be triaged by the RN and the on-call doctor will be called in if necessary.
